What This Hub Covers

What Is Video SEO?

Video SEO is making a video easy for search engines, video platforms and AI answer engines to find, understand and show. Search engines can't watch a video the way a buyer does. They read the page it sits on, its title, its description, its transcript and its structured data.

This hub covers the basics in one table, then two things the usual guides skip: what AI answers cited when we tested 14 buyer questions, and the presenter's side, meaning what to say on camera so captions, transcripts and AI quotes come out right.

Next guide coming: how to get your videos cited by AI search. Until then, the AI-answer test below has the findings.

The Basics

Video SEO in Eight Steps

What the top-ranking guides and Google's own video SEO documentation agree on.

StepWhat to do
1. Pick the questionOne video answers one question a buyer types. Use the words they use in the title and the first line.
2. Give it a pageGoogle wants a dedicated watch page per video, with the video as the main thing on it. The page has to be indexed before the video can be.
3. Write the title and descriptionSay what the video answers, plainly. The description is text search engines can read, so make it a real summary.
4. Choose the thumbnailA clear frame with a face and a few words. It earns the click in the results.
5. Add the transcript and captionsCorrect the auto-captions, upload the fixed file, and put the transcript on the page.
6. Add structured dataVideoObject markup with name, description, thumbnail, upload date and duration. Clip or SeekToAction markup can add key moments. List the video in a video sitemap.
7. Host it for the jobYouTube for videos people search for on YouTube. Your own site for videos that sell, so the visit lands with you.
8. Check itSearch Console's video indexing report shows which watch pages have an indexed video, and why the rest don't.

Our Test

What AI Answers Actually Cite

8 of 14buyer questions where an AI answer named VideoRep
0of our videos cited. Every citation was a text page
12YouTube links across all the answers. Vimeo: none

On 1 November 2026 we asked ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Overviews 14 questions a B2B buyer asks before hiring a presenter. VideoRep showed up in answers to 8 of them.

Every time an engine linked to us, it linked a text page: the homepage, service pages, the FAQ, a hiring playbook. We've made 1,000+ videos, and not one was cited. The lesson for video SEO: the words around a video and the words in its transcript are what an AI engine reads and quotes.

The Presenter's Side

What to Say on Camera So Search Gets It Right

Most video SEO happens after the edit. Some of it happens while I'm talking. The transcript is only as good as what the presenter says.

On cameraWhy it matters for search
Say the question first, in the buyer's wordsYour first line opens the transcript. When it repeats the buyer's question, the video, the title and the page all say the same thing.
Answer it in the next sentenceA sentence that makes sense on its own can be quoted on its own. One that starts with "so, yeah" can't.
Say the brand and product name in fullName it out loud, early. Then check how the captions spelled it, because auto-captions often get names wrong.
Say numbers clearly, onceCheck the caption file says the same number you meant. A wrong figure in a transcript is a wrong figure in a quote.
Name what's on screenSay "the pricing page", not "this here". The transcript can't see your screen.
One question per videoA focused video gets a focused title, transcript and page. Split long talks into short answers.

Questions

Video SEO Questions

What is video SEO?

Video SEO is making a video easy for search engines, video platforms and AI answer engines to find, understand and show. Most of it is text: the page the video sits on, the title and description, the transcript, and the structured data.

Should B2B video go on YouTube or on our own website?

Both, for different jobs. YouTube is a search engine of its own, so it suits videos that answer questions people type. Videos that sell your product belong on your site, on a page about that topic, so the visit lands with you. YouTube for B2B covers the channel side.

Do AI engines like ChatGPT cite videos?

Rarely, in our test. Across 14 buyer questions on five AI engines, the answers carried 12 YouTube links in total and no Vimeo links, and every VideoRep page they cited was a text page. Words on the page are what get read.

Do captions help video SEO?

A transcript gives search engines the words in the video. Captions help viewers who watch on mute. Auto-captions get names and numbers wrong, so correct them before you publish, then put the transcript on the page.
