Video Sales Letter

Video Sales Letters,
Delivered by a Human

A VSL is the longest anyone will voluntarily listen to your pitch. That makes the person delivering it the single highest-leverage decision in the funnel. I write it, present it, and hand back the ads that feed it.

What it is

A VSL is a sales conversation
that scales.

A video sales letter is a single long-form video that does the job a salesperson would do on a call: opens with the problem the viewer already feels, agitates it honestly, presents the mechanism, handles the obvious objections in order, and asks for a specific next step. Anywhere from four to twenty minutes, depending on price point and how much belief the offer requires.

It is the only asset in a funnel where someone chooses to give you sustained attention. A display ad gets a second. A landing page gets a scroll. A VSL, if the first ninety seconds earn it, gets ten minutes of undivided focus from someone actively considering a purchase. That is why the delivery matters more here than anywhere else.

The structure is old, borrowed directly from long-form direct-response copywriting, and it still works because it follows the order a sceptical person actually asks questions in. What has changed is that the letter is now a person on camera, and viewers decide whether to trust that person inside the first few seconds.

What you actually get

The VSL, and everything
that has to feed it.

A VSL with no traffic is a monologue. These engagements ship the whole loop.

1VSL

The main video sales letter

Long-form, presenter-led, structured against the objections your buyers actually raise. Scripted from your offer and positioning, or from a script you already have if it is written for camera.

  • Four to twenty minutes
  • Objection order, not feature order
  • Captioned and chaptered
5Ads

Ads that drive traffic to it

Short presenter-led ads built to hand a warm viewer to the VSL. Same face throughout, so the person who appears at the top of the funnel is the person still talking at the bottom.

  • Multiple hooks per concept
  • Vertical, square and landscape
  • Cut from the same session
1Confirm

The confirmation video

The video that plays after someone books or buys. Reduces no-shows, sets the agenda, and makes the next interaction feel like a continuation rather than a cold start.

  • Books the next step properly
  • Reduces no-show rate
  • Same presenter, same tone
Why presenter-led beats slides

Nobody buys from
a voiceover and a deck.

The default VSL format for years was slides with a voiceover. It is cheap, it is fast, and it treats a buying decision as an information transfer. That works for a twenty dollar ebook. It stops working the moment the purchase carries career risk, which describes almost every B2B decision.

When there is real money involved, the viewer is not only assessing the offer. They are assessing whether the person behind it seems credible, and whether they would be comfortable explaining this decision to their boss. A face on screen gives them something to judge. Slides give them nothing, so they default to scepticism.

This is also why the same presenter should appear in the ad and the VSL. Recognition compresses the trust-building work. By the time someone reaches the sales letter they have already spent time with the person delivering it, and the first ninety seconds do not have to start from zero.

How it runs

Script first. Always.

1. Offer teardown

One call on what you sell, who says no and why, and what the buyer has to believe before they act. The objections we surface here become the spine of the script.

2. Script

I write the VSL and the ads together so the language matches across the funnel. You approve every word before a camera is switched on.

3. One session

VSL, ads and confirmation video captured in a single shoot. This is why the whole set can ship in days rather than being spread across three separate engagements.

4. Delivered and ready

Captioned, chaptered, cut to the formats your pages and placements need. Unlimited revisions until it is right.

How long should it be

Long enough to answer
every objection. No longer.

The honest answer is that length follows price and complexity, not preference. A low-commitment lead magnet may only need three or four minutes. A high-ticket offer where the buyer needs to believe a mechanism they have never heard of may genuinely need fifteen or twenty, and cutting it short leaves objections unhandled at the exact moment the viewer is deciding.

The reliable rule is that a VSL should be exactly as long as it takes to answer, in order, every question a sceptical buyer would ask on a sales call. Anything beyond that is padding and viewers feel it. Anything short of it leaves them with a reason to say no that you never addressed.

Which is why the objection teardown happens before the script rather than after. The script length is an output of that conversation, not a number decided in advance.

Questions

Video sales letter questions, answered

How long should a VSL be?

As long as it takes to answer every objection a sceptical buyer would raise, in the order they would raise them. That is usually four to twenty minutes depending on price point and how much belief the mechanism requires. We work the length out from the objection teardown rather than deciding it up front.

Do you write the script or do we?

Either. Most engagements have me write it, because the VSL and the ads need to share language and that is easier from one pen. If you have a script already I will read it for camera and tell you honestly what I would change before we shoot.

Can we get the ads at the same time?

Yes, and you should. Verified Investing took five ads, a VSL and a confirmation video from one session. Capturing them together is why the set can ship in days and why the same presenter appears at every stage of the funnel.

What if the VSL does not convert?

Then we look at whether the problem is the video or the traffic, because it is often the traffic. If the first cut genuinely misses the brief, it is refunded. Otherwise you get unlimited revisions until it is right.

Is a talking head enough, or does it need graphics?

Both, layered. The presenter carries the argument and graphics support the points that genuinely need showing rather than telling. Screen capture, data, product UI. The face stays central because that is what is being judged.

How fast can this move?

Two to three weeks is typical from brief to delivery. EyeFly Digital had a full VSL plus three ad variations delivered 24 hours after the shoot when the launch date could not move.

Get a VSL worth watching.

Tell me the offer and who keeps saying no. That conversation is the script.
